The Bear Facts

SJC Brooklyn carries the momentum from their emphatic 75-72 victory against Purchase on Thursday. Snapping a four-game skid, the 15-point comeback against the Panthers was the largest against Skyline opposition since 2016.

The Bears were led by Chris Mikos’ 37-point effort, a new career-high for the senior forward, on 13-of-24 shooting. He also pulled 10 rebounds for his Skyline-leading 10th double-double. Joe Sheehan produced his first collegiate double-double behind a career-best 14 rebounds and 10 points while Evan Sirakis rounded out an SJC trio in double-figures with 10 points to go with six boards, and four dimes. James Mojica also contributed eight rebounds.

Prior to Thursday’s win, the Bears dropped an 87-59 home decision to Manhattanville on Tuesday night. Mikos finished with 21 points and 12 boards while Joseph Ghotra and Emmanuel Coffey combined to chip in 10 points.

Averaging 29 points and 11 rebounds in the two-game stretch, Mikos surged to second in the league in scoring (20.7) and is tied with Sarah Lawrence’s Justin Bailey atop the Skyline with 10.2 rebounds per outing.

Despite falling to the Golden Eagles in December in Patchogue, Samil Melo led the way for the Bears with a career-high 22 points, shooting 11-of-15 from the floor. Sirakis (15) and Mikos (12) joined Melo in double-figure scoring.

The Bears look to halt a two-game skid to their sibling rivals and are winners of five of the last seven in the series.

Golden Eagle Gameplan

Sitting in third in the South Division, third-year head coach Mike McSloy looks to guide the Golden Eagles back to the postseason for the first time since the 2016-17 season. SJC Long Island carries a five-game win streak to Clinton Hill; tied with Farmingdale for the longest active winning streak in the league.

The Golden Eagles are led by a rookie class that has racked up seven of nine Rookie of the Week Awards this season. Two-time honoree Spencer Malloy leads the way 15.5 points per game, seventh in the Skyline, while four-time selection and reigning honoree Alec Tabada places 10th with 14.5 points per game. Malloy (8.2, 5th) and Tabada (7.1, 9th) also find themselves in the top 10 in rebounds per game.

Junior Jake Gaudiello places sixth with 4.4 assists per outing and third with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.3.

On Wednesday at Maritime, Malloy dropped a game-high 27 points, one shy of matching his career-high, going 12-of-14 from the field. The rookie added seven rebounds and a pair of assists to his stat line. Tabada registered 16 points, seven boards, and four steals while one-time Rookie of the Week sophomore Timothy Hirdt collected 10 caroms off the bench.

Last Sunday afternoon against USMMA, Tabada finished with a season-high 22 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Matthew Hirdt totaled 12 points and Ryan McNeely finished with 11 in the win. Malloy flirted with a double-double behind eight points and nine rebounds.

Malloy (27), Gaudiello (18), Tabada (13), and McNeely (10) all scored in double figures as the Golden Eagles defeated the Bears, 84-65, this past December in Patchogue.
