Top 10 Moments: #1 – Construction on The Hill Center is Completed

After 28 months of eager anticipation, we are proud to announce that construction of The Hill Center is now complete. The 40,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility – fittingly named after SJC's sixth president, S. Elizabeth Hill – is the first new building on the Brooklyn Campus since McEntegart Hall Library opened in 1965.  Sr. Elizabeth, who recently retired this past June, was the driving force behind the development of this amazing facility, which is set to open its doors to the SJC family during the Fall Semester.

The long-awaited Hill Center will serve the College in a number of capacities, but its most notable use will be as the first on-campus athletics home venue for the Bears and Lady Bears, featuring a 270-spectator basketball and volleyball court with a premiere sound system, scoreboard and full-color message board.  The court itself is appropriately named for long-time coach and current Athletic Director, Frank P. Carbone, who is entering his 18th year at SJC and guided the program to full NCAA Division III membership back in 2011.

Over 150 SJC student-athletes will enjoy a variety of amenities contained within The Hill Center, including the new athletes' lounge and home team locker rooms replete with customized wood lockers, carpets and furniture. The student-athletes will also benefit from the expanded Sports Medicine office, featuring an array of treatment and taping tables, plus hot and cold whirlpools to enhance rehab and recovery.

In addition to housing all of the Athletic Department's staff and coaches, the three-level facility will feature something for the entire SJC community to enjoy. All SJC students, faculty and staff will have access to the fully-equipped fitness center on the third floor with brand new cardio machines, expanded weights and TV monitors. The dance studio, which will serve the dance and step teams, will also be the home for our expanded fitness class offerings, such as zumba and yoga. In addition, there will be four separate locker rooms complete with showers for students and faculty/staff.  Finding parking for classes or games will also be made much easier, courtesy of the nearly 100 below ground parking spots that will be available as part of the new facility.

Among the many highlights contained within The Hill Center, one of the more unique features is the third floor outdoor terrace high above Vanderbilt Ave. which showcases a picturesque view of midtown Manhattan.  Finally, what better way to watch a Bears or Lady Bears game than from the spacious second floor presidential suite, which overlooks the court and has all of the comforts of your living room, including a 60” flat screen television, a plush couch and room for up to a dozen people to enjoy the game action below.

Stay tuned for more details as we anticipate hosting a Grand Opening once The Hill Center receives the "green light" to officially open its doors to the SJC community!
