James Lally Appointed Director of Athletics and Recreation

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — After an extensive search, St. Joseph's College Assistant Vice President & Senior Director of Athletics and Recreation Shantey Hill announces the selection of James Lally as the director of athletics and recreation for the Brooklyn campus. He will oversee the Bears NCAA Division III athletic program with 13 varsity sports competing in the Skyline Conference.

"James possesses the right skills and characteristics to provide strong and effective leadership for the student-athletes, coaches and staff within the SJC Brooklyn athletic department. His years of experience with community service, student-athlete development, coaching, budgets and fundraising will prove beneficial as he begins to establish a sustainable environment that past, present and future Bears can be proud of."

Lally brings over 10 years of Division I experience as both a student-athlete and an administrator to Clinton Hill after serving most recently as assistant director of athletics at Hofstra University.

"I am very excited to be joining the SJC community. St. Joseph's College has such a rich history and tradition in the Brooklyn and New York area," remarked Lally. "I look forward to working with the tremendous staff of administrators and coaches in serving our student-athletes, giving them the tools and resources they need to succeed in all aspects of their collegiate experiences and beyond."

As a senior staff member and sport administrator for baseball, he was responsible for fundraising, budgeting, scholarship allocation and day-to-day operations for the Pride's 17 intercollegiate sports. Lally oversaw fundraising efforts through the establishment of corporate sponsorships and partnerships with key community stakeholders, providing additional resources that enhanced the overall student-athlete experience. Additionally, he oversaw community engagement for the department that totaled more than 3,000 hours of community service per year during his tenure.

The director of student-athlete services for two years prior to being promoted in 2013, he has extensive experience in developing programming designed to assist student-athletes in their athletic, personal and professional development in order to achieve success on the fields and courts, in the classroom and throughout their lives. Lally originally joined Hofstra as an assistant baseball coach in 2009.

"Shantey has done outstanding work over the years, enhancing the athletic departments on both the Patchogue and Brooklyn campuses," continued Lally. "I look forward to continuing to build our programs and strive for excellence in representing St. Joseph's College."

As a Division I student-athlete, Lally pitched for three seasons for St. John's University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 2007 and a Master of Science in 2009. A three-time Big East Conference Academic All-Star, he made 59 relief appearances for the Red Storm, compiling a 3.50 ERA with six saves and was a member of two NCAA Tournament teams.

No stranger to the local area, the Floral Park native attended Archbishop Molloy High School and played baseball and basketball for the legendary Head Coach Jack Curran, helping the Stanners to the CHSAA city baseball championship in 2002.

Lally is actively involved in several community organizations, including The Special Olympics of New York, the Let All The Children Play Foundation, and the Floral Park Little League. Lally is also currently completing a Master of Business Administration from Hofstra.

He currently resides in Port Washington with his wife Danielle and their daughter Callahan.
