Porcasi and Mecham Named Skyline Scholar-Athletes of the Year
NEW YORK — After both being selected to the All-Conference First Team and the Academic Honor Roll, St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) senior Victoria Porcasi (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) of the women's basketball team and freshman Jessica Mecham (West Jordan, Utah/Copper Hills) of the softball team were honored as Skyline Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports, announced by the league office recently.
In her senior campaign, Porcasi averaged 17.7 points per game on the hardwood, elevating her to 1,647 total points which were the most in SJC Brooklyn's NCAA era and third all-time by a Bear. She also led the league in three-point field goal percentage (.396) and three-pointers made (82), graduating as the Bears career leader in both categories. She was a three-time Academic Honor Roll selection and garnered All-Sportsmanship Team and All-Conference honors once over her career.
Mecham earned first-team honors as a utility player after leading the team with a 3.38 ERA and finishing second in innings pitched. At the plate, she finished third in the conference in on-base percentage (.508), seventh in slugging (.519), and eighth in batting (.385). In the circle, she recorded six victories, which included four complete-game shutouts.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award is presented to the First-Team All-Conference performer who carries the highest grade point average for the semester in which the student-athlete competes. Porcasi and Mecham are the third and fourth Bear Student-Athletes to receive the honor since SJC Brooklyn joined the Skyline in the 2015-16 season and the first to receive it in their respective sports.
