Luke Caccavo was a member of the 1,500-point scoring club as a Bear from 2000-2004, and served as team captain his junior and senior seasons. In 2003, Caccavo was honored as a USCAA All-American, totaling 465 points in 29 games (16.0 points per game) and helped lead the Bears to the USCAA National Championship game, the only national title game appearance to date in any sport in school history. He followed that up with 481 points, averaging 18.5 points per game in his senior campaign, highlighted by a 36-point effort against Medgar Evers College, a total that hasn’t been surpassed since his graduation in 2004.

“Luke was the total package,” said coach Joseph Cocozello. “He handled the ball well, could score from anywhere on the court, he could defend inside and on the perimeter, and he rebounded on both ends of the floor.

“At 6-foot-4, his size and versatility created matchup nightmares for opposing teams. He had the ability to post up smaller defenders, and when bigger guys were asked to guard him, they had to get out on him because he could knock down the jumper, and when they attempted to get out on him, he was simply too quick and blew right by them.”

After graduating SJC, Caccavo joined Cocozello on the sidelines as an assistant coach for four seasons and was part of the coaching staff that guided the Bears to their first Hudson Valley Men’s Athletic Conference championship in school history.

“Luke was harder on himself than any player I’ve ever coached,” Cocozello said. “He was never satisfied, and he always held himself personally accountable when the team wasn’t playing at its best. He never allowed his teammates to accept blame, but rather always focused on what he could have done better.”

Caccavo currently lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Isabella DeAngelis Caccavo ’04, and their newborn daughter, Mia.
