@OW_Panthers Baseball battles in Skyline Conference Championship opener

Second-seeded Old Westbury will now face top-seeded Farmingdale State in Saturday’s elimination game

Skyline Conference Championship Central

FARMINGDALE, NY ---
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball dropped a 4-2 final to the sixth-seeded St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) Bears (22-18) Saturday afternoon in the Skyline Conference Championship double-elimination round hosted by Farmingdale State College.  No. 2 Old Westbury (26-14) will now face the top-seeded Farmingdale State Rams (18-15) at 4:40 PM.

Tommy Ziegen (2-for-4, R) stroked a two-out triple to left center before Dean Sheridan's RBI single gave Old Westbury the first-inning lead on Bear starter Rosario DiLorenzo (5-5, 6 IP, 8 H, 2 ER).

St. Joseph's answered in the second with three-straight hits to open the frame off Panther starter Jeremy Charles (6-3, 9 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB, 6 K), including a RBI single by Adam Schwartz that scored John Condon.

The Bears then took a 3-1 lead in the third with RBI doubles by Brian Luebcke (2-for-4, RBI, R) and Nicholas LoPrinzi (3-for-4, RBI, R).

Old Westbury scratched one run across in the seventh to end DiLorenzo's outing with a 3-2 lead.  After back-to-back singles, Jesse Russo lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Michael Cardino to make it a 3-2 game.

The Panthers stranded seven runners in the game, including Kevin Lao (2-for-3, SB) in the eighth after drilling a two-out triple.

LoPrinzi led off the ninth with a single and scored four batters later on a passed ball by catcher Carlos Balmaceda for the insurance run.

Mitch Brigando secured the Bears' win with 2.1 innings of one-hit ball to nail down his first save of the season.
