SJC Brooklyn Places 24 on Skyline Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll
NEW YORK — Recognizing outstanding achievement in the classroom and the playing field, 24 student-athletes from St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) were named to the Skyline Academic Honor Roll as announced by Skyline Conference Commissioner Linda Bruno earlier today.
The academic honor roll distinguishes student-athletes in the league who compiled a 3.3 grade point average during the fall semester while competing in the conference’s seven fall sports—men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball.
"The Skyline Conference student-athletes continue to exemplify development and dedication to their studies and their sports," said Bruno. "I am proud to recognize these bright young men and women, whose academic performance is a shining example and in line with the NCAA Division III Philosophy Statement."
Despite having the smallest enrollment in the 11-member conference, the 24 honorees across five teams ranks tied for eighth in the league, along with College of Mount Saint Vincent and SUNY College at Old Westbury, with 447 in total across the league receiving the distinction. Of those honored from Brooklyn, five boasted perfect 4.0 grade point averages and 10 compiled a 3.8 or better.
"We are extremely proud of our student-athletes who demonstrate both sportsmanship in competition and excellence in the classroom," commented Jack P. Calareso, PhD., president of St. Joseph's College.
The men's soccer team led the way with 10 honorees. The women's volleyball team followed with seven recipients, including First-Team All-Skyline selection Lauren GaNun, and also had the highest percentage of their team receiving the distinction.
"To have 24 of our fall student-athletes on the Skyline Academic Honor Roll is quite an accomplishment. We in Brooklyn are extremely proud of our young men and women," remarked Alex Winnicker, interim director of athletics and recreation. "This is something that occurs only when the students truly understand the importance of their education, and when those in academics and athletics align themselves to work towards the best benefit of those students."
