Baseball Pounds John Jay at Keyspan Park

BROOKLYN, NY – Chris Coffey (Brooklyn, NY/Kingsborough CC) pitched seven innings surrendering only two hits and Jon Mendez(Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in a 19-1 victory over John Jay College on Thursday afternoon at Keyspan Park.  St. Joseph's improves to 8-13 while John Jay falls to 6-18 and both teams split the season series one game apiece.

Coffey tossed five no-hit innings until a leadoff single to center in the sixth broke the no-hitter.  The Bloodhounds got their only hits of the game and scored their lone run in the same inning.  The win is Coffey's fourth of the season and his third straight victory in his last three starts on the mound.  He struck out six and issued no walks during the outing.

St. Joseph's scored in every inning except the first and seventh and built a 10-0 lead when John Jay scored their only run.  Alvaro Quinones (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) registered the game-winning RBI in the second inning with a two run triple down the left field line that scored Mario Noriega (Los Angeles, CA/South Pasadena) and Anthony Langone (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic).

In the third inning, Chris Davidson (San Carlos, CA/Canada College) made a great defensive play in right field, doubling up a runner at first on a fly ball with a laser to Langone.  In the bottom half of the frame, Davidson hit a double down the left field line in the third that scored two more runs, and extended his hitting streak to eight games.  Davidson also drew two walks and scored three times.

Mendez had three singles, all to the outfield, in his first three at bats.  His one-out single to left in the fourth scored A.J. Passione (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) and Steven Tanamal(Brooklyn, NY/New Urtecht) for his team-leading 21st RBI.  Passione stole four bases, his highest single game total, and scored three times, leading the team in both categories.  He also went 2-for-4, walked twice and drove in a run.

John Cubero (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) and Danny Contant (Staten Island, NY/Xavarian) combined for two scoreless innings to close the game.

Eight Bears combined for 12 hits, drew 13 walks, and struck out only once against the John Jay pitchers.

Tanamal finished 2-for-3, his sixth multiple-hit game this season, scoring three times with two walks.  Joseph Boccia(Westwood, NJ/Westwood) had a double and an RBI to extend his hitting streak to seven games.  He leads the team in extra base hits (9).  Noriega finished with a pair of runs and RBIs and a single.  Keith Juricich (San Mateo, CA/Canada College) scored twice, stole three bases and drew two walks.  Langone had two RBIs and one run.

Rain cancelled the second home game at Keyspan Park scheduled against Baruch College for Saturday afternoon.  St. Joseph's will return to action on Monday, April 13 at Keyspan Park as a road team facing Polytechnic University for a single game.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
