Drew Pulls Away From Bears At Home

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College baseball team fell to Drew University 11-1 at the Nellie Bligh Field on Thursday afternoon.  Drew scored seven runs in the final two innings to break open a three-run game.

Jon Mendez (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) went 2-for-3 and scored the only run for St. Joseph's, playing his first game at second base.  Outfielder Alvaro Quinones (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) went 2-for-4, the only other Bear with a multi-hit game.  Outfielder Keith Juricich (San Mateo, CA/Serra) had a hit and an RBI.

Kevin Hernandez (Corona, NY/Newtown) started the game on the mound and took the loss pitching 7.2 innings, giving up seven runs (six earned), striking out three and walking four.

Matthew McGrath (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) led Drew (4-18) going 2-for-5 and with four RBI.  David Kaplow (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) went 3-for-5 with three RBI.  Tom Murray and Drew Obergfell scored three runs each.  It is the second straight win for Drew, upending Garden State rivals Centenary College 13-2 yesterday.

Drew University scored two runs in the second inning and never trailed for the remainder of the contest.

After the Rangers added a single tally in the fourth, St. Joseph's rallied in the bottom half of the frame after drawing three straight walks off starter Ben Lynch (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) to load the bases with no one out.  Juricich singled to center to bring home Mendez, prompting a pitching change.  Patrick Rock (Cranston, RI/Providence Country Day) came in relief and retired the next three Bears to escape the jam.

Rock finished the game pitching six scoreless innings and limiting St. Joseph's to two hits.

Hernandez pitched a spirited game, keeping St. Joseph's within striking distance, before Drew started to pull away in the eighth plating three runs.

St. Joseph's heads to Washington, DC on Saturday, April 10 to face Gallaudet University for a two-game set starting at 1 p.m.
