Bears Garner USCAA Year End Honors

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, ME – Three Bears have been honored as the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) announced their year-end awards at the USCAA National Baseball Championships in Old Orchard Park, ME. Junior Kevin Diaz (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) was named as an All-American Honorable Mention and senior Kevin Hernandez (Corona, NY/Newtown) and junior Joseph Boccia (Westwood, NJ/Westwood) made the National All-Academic Team.

OVERLAND PARK, KS – The Association for Division III Independents (AD3I) released their 2011 All-Independent teams, with five Bears being recognized for their play this year. For the second straight season, St. Joseph’s had two representatives on the All-Independent First Team. Freshman Joseph Mendez (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) becomes the first Bear to ever make the First Team as a freshman and Jon Mendez (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) earns a spot on the First Team squad for the first time after being named to the Second Team the past two seasons.

BRONX, NY – Juniors Joseph Boccia (Westwood, NJ/Westwood) and Jon Mendez (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) both became the first players in the four year history of St. Joseph's College baseball to record 100 career hits yesterday in game one of a doubleheader against Yeshiva. Boccia singled in each of the first two innings and Mendez doubled in the third to reach the milestone. The Bears improve to 8-22 on the season after sweeping the Maccabees 8-3 and 4-3.

BROOKLYN, NY – In their previous five games, including game one of Saturday’s doubleheader against NYU-Poly, the St. Joseph’s baseball team scored 19 runs. In the second inning of game two, they scored seven on their way to their biggest offensive outburst of the season in the 18-4 win.

BROOKLYN, NY – Carrying some momentum from a sweep of John Jay the previous night, St. Joseph’s looked to continue their winning ways against Purchase. The Bears drew first blood against Panthers, but couldn’t maintain their lead and despite tying the game in the bottom of the seventh, fell 13-6 on Sunday afternoon at MCU Park.

BROOKLYN, NY – The Bears’ bats came alive on Saturday afternoon producing 23 runs taking both ends of a doubleheader, 8-1 and 15-7, from John Jay College at the American Legion Field. It was a true team effort with all ten Bears' batters recording an RBI, and nine driving in two runs each.

A six-run frame in game two proved too much of a deficit to overcome, also losing the nightcap 7-4.

OLD WESTBURY, NY - Playing their second doubleheader in as many days, St. Joseph’s couldn’t repeat their sweep from Saturday and dropped both games to Old Westbury, 8-5 and 14-2, Sunday afternoon. The Panthers had 14 hits in each game and outhit the Bears 28-7 for the doubleheader. Old Westbury also took advantage of some Bears miscues, scoring a total of 11 unearned runs.

BELLEROSE, NY – Freshman Joseph Mendez (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) hit a walk-off three-run homer giving the St. Joseph’s College baseball team a 5-3 victory over Rivier in their home opener at Padavan-Preller Field. The Bears followed it up with a 15 hit barrage in the nightcap to sweep the Raiders, 12-6.

The Bears fall to 1-9 on the season while Staten Island improves to 4-6.
