Bears Baseball Sweeps Mount Saint Vincent, Moves to 8-0

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Helped by a complete game shutout by freshman Rosario DiLorenzo (Howard Beach, NY/Archbishop Molloy) in game two, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader defeating the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 11-4, in game one and 2-0 in the nightcap.

The Bears (8-0) improve on their school-record start and have now won 12 games in a row dating back to last season. The Dolphins (0-9) remain winless to begin the season following a 15-22 finish last year.

In the opener, the Bears got on the board early scoring three runs in the top of the first and would not look back as they built a 6-0 lead with the deficit proving too much to overcome for Mount Saint Vincent as they would get as close as 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth but St. Joseph's tacked on five more runs to capture the win.

Sophomore Chris Cutrone (Levittown, NY/Island Trees HS) went the distance surrendering four earned runs and seven hits while striking out four to pick up his third win of the season.  Cutrone helped his cause going 2-for-4 from the plate with three RBI and three runs scored in game one and finished the day going 4-for-7 with a total of four RBI.

The nightcap saw DiLorenzo and Dolphins starter Mike McManus go toe-to-toe with each throwing six shutouts innings before the Bears struck in the top of the seventh scoring two runs to seal the win.

DiLorenzo allowed three hits while striking out six for his first collegiate win as he pitched four perfect innings before the Dolphins touched him up for a leadoff single in the fifth.  The freshman would not allow a runner to reach second until the seventh inning.

Vinny Rossi (Bayside, NY/Holy Cross) went 2-for-6 driving in three runs while also scoring a run and teammate senior Kevin Diaz (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) batted 3-for-8 producing three runs while also driving in a run.

TURNING POINT - GAME ONE

The Bears opened the game sending seven batters to the plate with three of them scoring helped by a an RBI single by Cutrone and a two-RBI single by Rossi giving the Bears an early 3-0 lead that they would not give up.

After scoring two more runs to give themselves a 6-0 lead, St. Joseph's gave up four runs in the bottom of the fourth but Cutrone settled down and would not give up another run as the Bears tacked on five more runs to clinch the victory.

TURNING POINT - GAME TWO

After a pitchers' duel broke out in the first six innings, St. Joseph's was able to break the scoreless tie scoring both their runs with two outs. Joe Mendez (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) led off the two-out rally with a double and was brought home with an RBI double by Mike Cundari (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's). The Bears tacked on an insurance run when Cutrone singled giving them a 2-0 lead they would not relinquish.

Mount Saint Vincent got their first runner to second base after a single and wild pitch but DiLorenzo ended the rally striking out Leutrim Hoxha to clinch the victory.
