Bears Baseball Held Scoreless in Sweep by Centenary

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Centenary falling, 6-0, in game one and, 12-0, in the nightcap on Saturday evening at TD Bank Ballpark.

The Bears (13-8) have now dropped a season-high six games in a row their longest streak since a six-game streak in April of 2011 while the Cyclones (16-13-1) have won ten of their last 13 ballgames after starting the season 6-10-1.

Game one started as a pitchers' duel as the game was scoreless after four and a half innings with Bears sophomore starter Chris Cutrone (Levittown, NY/Island Trees HS) and Centenary starter Dylan Kemmerer combining to allow only four hits. The Cyclones broke the 0-0 tie with a run in the fifth before tacking on five insurance runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

The nightcap saw two scoreless innings before Centenary put a four spot on the board in the third to build a 4-0 advantage before scoring eight runs over the course of the next three innings to take a 12-0 lead after six innings that they would not relinquish.

Cutrone (3-4) finished the day going six innings surrendering six earned runs on nine hits while fanning four while the Bears were stymied by Kemmerer (3-0) finishing the opener recording only two hits with one hit coming in the third and the other in the seventh inning.

Freshman Rosario DiLorenzo (Howard Beach, NY/Archbishop Molloy) (2-1) took the loss in game two for the Bears going 4 1/3 innings allowing nine runs (five earned) on ten hits while striking out three. St. Joseph's was again held in check by Cyclones pitching as Joe Frankosky (2-5) went the distance allowing six hits while fanning five.

Sophomore Vinny Rossi (Bayside, NY/Holy Cross) led the Bears at the plate going 2-for-6 in the twinbill including recording one of St. Joseph's only two hits in the opener. Sophomore Thomas McKenna (Bellerose, NY/St. Francis Prep) went 2-for-4 at the plate including a stolen base while Cutrone picked up the other hit in the opener and finished the night going 1-for-6.

TURNING POINT – GAME 1

After Centenary scored a run in the bottom half of the fifth after a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead, St. Joseph's threatened to tie the score with Chris Pacifico (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep) reaching third as the tying run with two outs but a groundout to the third baseman ended the threat.

In the subsequent half inning the Cyclones sent ten batters to the plate with five insurance runs scoring helped by a trio of RBI singles and an RBI double giving Centenary a 6-0 advantage that would prove too much for the Bears to overcome.

TURNING POINT – GAME 2

After two and a half scoreless innings, Centenary sent eight batters to the dish with four of them scoring, all with two outs, helped by a St. Joseph's error, two-RBI single, and a two-RBI triple giving the Cyclones a 4-0 lead after three innings. Centenary would follow that up by scoring eight runs over the next three innings to build an insurmountable lead of 12-0 after six.
