Cutrone's Complete Game, Timely Hitting Help Baseball Edge William Paterson

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Chris Cutrone (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) notched his third straight complete game victory as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team won their ninth straight game, edging William Paterson University, 3-2, on Monday afternoon at MCU Park.

The victory lifts the Bears (20-8) past the 20-win threshold for the second-straight season, matching the program record for wins. The win over William Paterson (11-17-1) also marks the second-ever triumph against an opponent from the New Jersey Athletic Conference, which currently features two ranked squads.

Cutrone won his sixth straight decision for the Bears, improving to 6-1 on the hill allowing just one earned run and striking out 10 batters against no walks. Domenick Camerada (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) contributed with a career day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with four singles and one run batted in.

St. Joseph's jumped out to a early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a Camerada RBI single followed by a bases-loaded walk by Mitch Brigando (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep), both coming with two outs.

Cutrone was nearly perfect through three and worked out of a jam in the fourth leaving runners at first and second with back-to-back strikeouts, but William Paterson cut the deficit in half in the fifth, scoring an unearned run on a throwing error during a bunt attempt. The Pioneers produced a three-hit frame in the sixth, tying the game at 2-2 on a Kyle Dotey single.

After pushing the two early runs across with relative ease, the Bears couldn't get the bats going through the middle innings. But the Bears manufactured the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh, pinch-hitter Anthony DeFillippo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) starting the inning with a lead-off walk. Anthony Inserillo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) was inserted to pinch run, then stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch – the first runner to reach third since the opening frame. Nicholas LoPrinzi (Howard Beach, N.Y./Beach Channel) delivered him home, lifting a sacrifice fly to right, that easily scored the speedy Inserillo.

The Pioneers threatened to tie the game in the eighth, Mike Abate knocking a two-out single, stealing second and reaching third on an overthrow trying to get him at second, but Cutrone escaped the threat with an infield popup.

Chris Santaniello led off the ninth for the Pioneers with a single, appearing to start a rally, but was caught advancing to second after an overthrow at first with Camerada backing up on the play. Cutrone secured the victory with a grounder and his double-digit strikeout to give the Bears their 20th win of the season.
