Baseball Secures a Doubleheader Split With Maritime College

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – After numerous postponements and cancellations in March, the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) baseball team began the month of March by splitting a doubleheader with Maritime College, winning 9-3 and losing 11-5, Sunday afternoon at Abraham Lincoln High School.

The Bears (2-5) were led by Nicholas LoPrinzi (Howard Beach, N.Y./St. Francis Prep), who drove in four runs over the doubleheader. Catcher Domenick Camerada (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) finished with two hits, two runs, and two RBI while reaching base five times over the two games.

Francis Rapp (Baldwin, N.Y./Oceanside), Michael Camerada (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell), and Anthony DeFillippo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) each plated two runs batted in for St. Joseph's. Pitcher Mitch Brigando (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) allowed just an earned run and fanned six over four innings for his second victory on the season.

Chris Deddo paced the Privateers (2-5) by lacing five hits and driving in five runs, including a home run and four RBI in their game two win. Brian McLaughlin and Joe Longo also homered in Maritime's victory.

In game one, Brigando escaped an early bases-loaded jam in the first by inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat. St. Joseph's and Maritime each scored two runs in the second inning to remain even. The third saw the Bears grab two more on D. Camerada crossing the plate on a wild pitch and Chris Cutrone (Levittown, N.Y./Xaverian) scoring on a Rapp groundout.

Brigando and reliever Connor Pasetti (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) got out of further trouble for the Bears, stranding two runners each in the fourth and fifth innings to keep their advantage. They broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning. D. Camerada knocked in DeFillippo on a base hit, then LoPrinzi smacked a two-run ground-rule double and a Rapp RBI single put the game out of reach. Patrick Broder (Baldwin, N.Y./Oceanside) wrapped up the game in the seventh and got out of further harm with a double play.

The second game saw the Privateers grab a run in the first inning, then St. Joseph's evened the score with a M. Camerada RBI fielder's choice in the top of the second. After a homer gave Maritime a one-run lead, the Bears came back with two runs in the top of the fourth and led 3-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, a Longo lead-off homer tied the game right back. A Deddo RBI double and a bases-loaded walk capped off the inning for the Privateers. Deddo would contribute again in the following frame, drilling a three-run shot in the next inning as they compiled four in the fifth inning en route to their second win on the season.

Up next for the Bears is a rescheduled matchup with CUNYAC foe Lehman College this Wednesday. First pitch is at 5:00 p.m. at Lehman College South Field.
