Baseball Seeks to Take Season Series with Road Showdown with Maritime

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team (11-14) looks to shake off losing three of their last four games as they head to Throggs Neck to take on future Skyline Conference rival Maritime College in their rubber match Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Last Meeting

In their last meeting with Maritime, the team split a doubleheader winning 9-3 in game one and losing 11-5 in game two, on March 15th at Abraham Lincoln High School.

The team was led by Nicholas LoPrinzi, who drove in four runs over the doubleheader. Catcher Domenick Camerada finished with two hits, two runs, and two RBI while reaching base five times over the two games.

Francis Rapp, Michael Camerada and Anthony DeFillippo each plated two runs batted in for St. Joseph's. Pitcher Mitch Brigando allowed just an earned run and fanned six over four innings for his second victory on the season.

Outfielder Thomas McKenna tops the Bears on the offensive end as one of five players hitting over .300. The senior leads the team with a .388 batting average (31-for-80), nine stolen bases, and 15 runs batted in. He currently is riding a nine-game hitting streak. 

Senior Chris Cutrone is currently on a 12-game hitting streak, hitting .583 (14-for-24) with four runs scored and three runs batted in over six games. With his hot stretch, he earned AD3I Player of the Week and was named to the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week. He is second on St. Joseph's with a .351 average and is also tied with McKenna for first place with 17 runs scored along with two home runs apiece.

Shortstop Francis Rapp is hitting an even .300 on the team and is tied for third along with Domenick Camerada with 11 RBI. Third baseman Nicholas LoPrinzi is fifth on the team with a .321 batting average and is second with 12 runs batted in and eight runs scored.

On the mound, Mitch Brigando has compiled a 4-1 record, tossing four complete games. He has a 3.95 ERA and struck out 23 batters over 27.1 innings of work. Brian Luebcke has notched three wins with a team-low 2.67 earned run average, striking out a team-best 25 batters over 27.0 innings.

St. Joseph's Last Time Out at Staten Island

The Bears dropped both ends of a doubleheader to interborough rivals Staten Island, 7-3 in game one and 4-0 in game two, on Sunday afternoon at the Tomas D. Morales Field.

Seniors Thomas McKenna and Chris Cutrone continued their consistent hitting to lead the Bears, tallying collecting three hits each. Cutrone extended his hitting streak to a team season-high-tying 12 games with a double while McKenna belted a double and triple and now has a nine-game hitting streak. Francis Rapp also knocked three hits on the afternoon in a losing effort.

Cutrone Tabbed AD3I Player of the Week, D3Baseball.com Team of the Week

Senior Chris Cutrone was awarded the Association of Division III (AD3I) Independents baseball Player of the Week and was also named to the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week as one of the hottest hitting players on the Bears.

Cutrone had an impressive week at the plate for the Bears, hitting .583 (14-for-24) with four runs scored and three runs batted in over six games. During a twin bill with Staten Island, Cutrone added three hits and extended his hitting streak to a team season-high-tying 12 games.

This is the fourth time Cutrone has earned the AD3I Player of the Week, last winning the accolade on April 29, 2014. He also earns his first D3Baseball.com Team of the Week nomination in his career and is the first Bear this season to be named to the Team of the Week.

Privateer Watch

Maritime is led at the plate by freshman second baseman Chris Deddo, who leads the team and is seventh in the Skyline Conference with a .385 batting average (25-for-65) and tops the conference with 10 doubles. He also is tied for first on the team with 16 runs scored and has one home run and 14 RBI (tied for second).

Sophomore Brian McLaughlin is second on the Privateers, hitting .344 with a team-best 15 runs batted in and two home runs. Senior Joe Longo is tied for second with 14 RBI and has hit at a .318 clip.

Anthony Ancona paces Maritime on the mound, tied for second in the Skyline with three wins on the season. He tops the team with two complete game, and 28 strikeouts over 28.0 innings thrown. Both Ryan Alsdorf and Tyler Stuart each have two wins on the season.

Maritime Last Time Out vs. Mount Saint Mary

Maritime grabbed a doubleheader split against Mount Saint Mary in their last time out on Sunday afternoon, winning 9-6 in game before falling 5-4 in game two on Sunday afternoon at the Reinhart Baseball Field.
 
The Privateers was led by senior Albert Doerbecker with three hits in six at bats, while he also walked and scored a run while driving one in as well. Chris Deddo had with three runs scored and also walked twice. Brian McLaughlin led the team with three RBIs on the afternoon.

St. Joseph's will host Valley Forge for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the SJC Outdoor Complex in Patchogue as they celebrate Senior Day for players Thomas McKenna, Domenick Camerada, Vinny Rossi, Anthony Inserillo, Thomas Decapua, and Nicholas Calamia.
