Baseball's Four-Game Streak Snapped in Slugfest at Drew

MADISON, N.J. — The St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) baseball team remained hot with the lumber in a 10-run, 16-hit performance erasing an early four-run deficit, but Drew University plated nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings to propel them to a 13-10 victory in a non-conference slugfest on Thursday night.

How it Happened

  • Drew struck early with a three-hit, four-run bottom of the first inning. The rally was highlighted by back-to-back doubles from Ryan Sabbag and Jayson Mitch that brought home one and two runs respectively.
  • The Bears broke through in the third, plating three to cut into the deficit. Brian Luebcke delivered with a two-run double, that kept his hitting streak alive, and John Condon followed that up with an RBI-single.
  • After getting touched up in the first, starter Kevin White settled in and tossed his second consecutive scoreless inning in the bottom of the third, setting St. Joseph's up for a four-run outburst in the fourth, all coming with two outs, for their first lead. Michael Camerada kicked off the four-hit rally with a run scoring triple. Anthony DeFillippo and John Condon also connected with RBI singles and Nicholas LoPrinzi took a pitch in the side with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 7-4 as the Bears faced three Drew pitchers in the inning.
  • But the beautiful spring day started to turn into rain and washed away the Bears lead as Drew went back on top in the bottom of the fifth, exploding for five hits and six runs off the Bears middle relief, highlighted by Sabbag's two-run homer.
  • The Rangers tacked on three more insurance runs in the sixth to extend their advantage to 13-7, but St. Joseph's got three back in the top of the seventh. Camerada rounded the bases and drove in one on a base knock officially scored as a triple. Luecke then closed the rally with an RBI-single.
  • Davis Fouts tossed a scoreless eighth and Joshua Williams closed the door in the ninth with the tying run at the plate, but unable to bring any across.

  • Mitch, Mateo and Tommy Broyles recorded two runs-batted-in apiece.
  • Davis Foutos (1-0) earned the victory, allowing three earned runs in 4.1 innings of relief.
  • Joshua Williams threw a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
