Luebcke Joins 100-Hit Club as Baseball Sweeps UMPI to Move Above .500

BELLEROSE, N.Y. — Senior Brian Luebcke (Astoria, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) went deep for the third consecutive game and then became the 10th Bear in program history to reach the 100 career hit mark in game two as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team won a 4-1 pitcher's duel and then a 15-10 slugfest over University of Maine at Presque Isle in a non-conference doubleheader at Padavan-Preller Field on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened - Game 1

  • Michael Camerada broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second with a run scoring single, plating Thomas Pallatto who had previously reached on an error.
  • Maine-Presque Isle got on the board in the next frame returning the favor of a Bears miscue as Brady Rowe reached on an error and Matt Curry delivered him with an RBI-triple to even the score.
  • Brian Luebcke smashed a solo shot in the bottom of the third to put St. Joseph's back on top for good, 2-1.
  • Starter Rosario DiLorenzo fanned two in a scoreless fourth and the Bears offense tacked on two more insurance runs in a three-hit, two-run bottom half. Luebcke capped the rally with a run scoring double, finishing a 2-for-3 game at the dish with two RBI.
  • DiLorenzo tossed a perfect fifth, sixth and seventh innings to put the finishing touches on a complete-game victory, improving to 2-2 on the mound.

How it Happened - Game 2

  • The sides slugged 14 runs in the first two innings. The Owls opened the offensive outburst with a three-hit, two-run first. The Bears countered with four in the bottom half. Following Brian Luebcke's run scoring double, John Condon sent a go-ahead two-run shot to left. Brandon Salem tacked on an RBI-single to close the rally.
  • Following consecutive singles to open the second frame, the Owls' Matt Cauchon cleared the bases with a three-run smash, moving Maine-Presque Isle up 5-4. In the bottom half, St. Joseph's loaded the bases and Nicholas LoPrinzi was hit by a pitch to knot the game at 4-all. With the bases still loaded, Francis Rapp brought everyone home with a two-out grand slam to give the Bears an 9-5 advantage in dramatic fashion and never trailed again.
  • Leading 11-6 in the bottom of the fifth, St. Joseph's rallied for three more. Adam Schwartz and Luebcke highlighted the frame with consecutive run scoring doubles.
  • The Owls countered with more longball in the sixth inning. Matt Cauchon led off the frame with a solo shot and Ryan Sanderson later delivered a three-run blast to slice the deficit to 14-10.
  • But St. Joseph's would hang on as Michael Camerada laced a solo shot in the sixth for good measure, his first collegiate home run, and reliever James Moran tossed a scoreless seventh to seal the sweep.

For the Bears

  • Brian Luebcke finished 4-for-7 with a one home run and four RBI. The senior entered the afternoon four hits shy of 100 for his career and reached the mark in game two, becoming the 10th Bear in program history to do so. His longball in the opener was his third consecutive game going deep.
  • Michael Camerada (4-for-7, HR, 2B, 2 RBI) and John Condon (4-for-7, HR, 3 RBI) each went deep and slugged four hits apiece as well.
  • Francis Rapp hit 2-for-7, highlighting the afternoon with a go-ahead grand slam in game two, his first collegiate home run.
  • Rosario DiLorenzo was dominate in the opener, surrendering just four hits and one unearned run in the full seven innings. The starter fanned eight in evening his record at 2-2.
  • Starter Connor Pasetti improved to 2-1 in game two, surrendering six earned runs and striking out three in five innings of work. James Moran tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.

For the Owls

  • Matt Cauchon (4-for-7) and Ryan Sanderson (2-for-7) led the Owls with four RBI apiece, all in game two. Cauchon homered twice in the capper, while Sanderson went deep once.
  • Solomon Fast (3-for-7) and Adam Begos (2-for-5) also contributed multi-hit afternoons.
  • Starters Saul Nunez (2-3) and Jesus Garcia (0-3) each suffered the loss on the mound.

Inside the Box Score

  • After combining for a five-run, 12-hit pitcher's duel in game one, the sides exploded for 25 runs and 28 hits in game two. The Bears slugged 23 hits on the afternoon, while the Owls connected on 17, 13 of them in game two.
  • Maine-Presque Isle committed seven errors on the day, including five in game two. But just one of the Bears 15 runs in the game was unearned.
  • Both teams combined for seven home runs over the twinbill, blasting three each in game two and Luebcke with the lone blast in the opener.

The Bear Facts

  • Winners of three of their last four, St. Joseph's moves above .500 for the second time this season at 8-7 and improves their home record to 4-2.
  • In game two, Brian Luebcke became the 10th Bear in program history to reach the 100 career hit mark. A career .323 hitter, the senior reaches the plateau in 106 games played and 310 at bats. Luebcke's home run in the first was also the 100th home run hit in Bears program history.
  • Rosario DiLorenzo's complete game was his 12th of his career, moving him into a tie for second in the Bears record book with Donny Pagano '14.
  • Francis Rapp's grand slam was the seventh in program history and the first since Joe Mendez '14 launched one at Maritime on March 28, 2014.
  • St. Joseph's improves their overall record against Maine-Presque Isle to 4-1.
