Baseball Handed First League Losses of Season Dropping Pair at Patchogue

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — Despite erupting for five runs in the first inning of the series, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team was held scoreless the rest of the way as they dropped both ends of a Skyline Conference doubleheader, 9-5 and 3-0, to defending champion and sibling rivals St. Joseph's College (Long Island) on Saturday afternoon at the SJC Outdoor Field Complex.

Seniors Francis Rapp (Baldwin, N.Y./Oceanside) extended his hitting streak to seven with hits in both ends of the twin bill. Sophomore Luke Rehn (Sunman, Ind./Milan) batted 3-for-4 with a RBI in game one.

• The Bears jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with a big first inning, knocking five hits. The first three batters to the plate reached safely to load the bases for Francis Rapp who roped a two-run double to start the scoring. Thomas Pallato followed with a RBI single, Adam Schwartz brought another home with a sacrifice fly and Luke Rehn's capped the scoring with a RBI double.
• The Golden Eagles responded with five hits of their own in the home half of the inning to cut the deficit to 5-4.
• After the high-scoring first inning, both starters settled in and threw up zeros, until Long Island posted two in the fifth to take the lead for good. A Tyler Crafa two-out, two-run double provided the go ahead runs.
• Long Island tacked on three more insurance runs in the sixth and seventh while starter Brandon Lubrano went the distance, working around 11 hits, but allowing just two Bears to reach scoring position over the final eight innings.

• The Bears bats were silenced by Long Island starter Josh Outsen who held them hitless through 5.1 innings, before Michael Camerada rapped a single to break the no-hit bid.
• The Golden Eagles scored the game-winning run in the third on a sacrifice squeeze by Louis Fontinha and tacked one a pair in the fourth on a Matthew Burnett triple.
• Brooklyn managed just one more hit off Outsen who went the distance for the two-hit shutout.
