Baseball Outhits NJCU, But Falls 6-5 in Ninth

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Sophomores John Condon (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) and Adam Schwartz (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) combined to knock seven hits as the Bears outhit New Jersey City University, 11-6, but after erasing a three-run deficit, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team suffered a 6-5 defeat in a non-conference Wednesday matinee. The loss was the second straight walk-off setback and the seventh one-run loss on the season.

• After a swift two innings baseball with Condon knocking the lone hit by either squad, NJCU struck first in the third with a solo run driven in by Jeff Reinecke who brought home Zach Buchholz who was hit by a pitch and stole second.
• The Bears jumped on top with two runs in the top of the fourth knocking three hits in the frame. Condon led off the frame with his second straight hit and was followed by an Anthony Camerada single, both advancing to scoring position on a wild pitch. Adam Schwartz put the Bears on the board with a double and Michael Gonzalez gave the Bears their first lead with a grounder. SJC threatened for more turning over the lineup and loading the bases, but NJCU escaped with an inning-ending strikeout.
• The Bears' lone lead of the game was short-lived however as the Gothic Knights would score two more in the bottom half of the inning and two more in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead—CJ Pulcine's two-out, two-run single in the fourth giving NJCU the lead.
• Schwartz led off the sixth with a double to center, moved over to third on a grounder and DeFillippo brought him home with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 5-3.
• After two scoreless innings by Matthew Rienzi and Peter Terranova in relief maintained the deficit, St. Joseph's knotted the game in eighth at 5-all. The Bears loaded the bases with Condon and Schwartz singles sandwiched around an Anthony Camerada walk. Gonzalez drew a bases-loaded walk that prompted a NJCU pitching change and DeFillippo drew another walk to tie the game. But SJC couldn't bring any more home with bases loaded and no out as a popup and a double play stalled the rally.
• Condon tried to start a two-out rally in the ninth, lacing his fourth hit of the game, one-hopping the fence in right, but was left standing at second. In the home half of the inning and the top of the NJCU lineup up, back-to-back one-out doubles by Jeff Reinecke and Joe Coutinho sealed the second straight walk-off defeat for the Bears.

• John Condon knocked a career-high four hits finishing 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a double.
• Adam Schwartz assembled a 3-for-4 effort belting two doubles, driving in a run and scoring once.
• Michael Gonzalez and Anthony DeFillippo had two RBI each, Gonzalez walking once and DeFillippo walking twice.
• Michael Camerada extended his hitting streak to an active team-long eight games with a single in the eighth. It was his first game back after missing five due to injury.
• Anthony Camerada scored twice, knocking a hit and walking once.
• Joseph Titta made his first collegiate start going five innings in a no-decision. He allowed five runs on four hits and five walks.
• Matthew Rienzi and Peter Terranova both worked scoreless, hitless frames in relief. Terranova tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, striking out one.
• Jim Kennedy made his first appearance on the mound and took the loss, working 1.1 innings, striking out one and allowing one run on two hits.
