Mary Washington Takes Both Contests Over Baseball in Doubleheader

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team traveled south to the Old Dominion state to take on Mary Washington on Friday afternoon for their first of six games in three days. The hosts got the best of SJC exhibiting stellar offense outscoring the Bears 34-5 on the day to even their record at 6-6 on the season.

How It Happened (Game 1)

• Justus Acosta (Little Neck, N.Y./Holy Cross) and Adam Schwartz (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner) opened the top of the first with back-to-back singles to ignite a five-run inning highlighted by two RBI apiece from Michael Gonzalez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) and Joseph Langan (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep).
• A St. Joseph's error opened the floodgates for Mary Washington in the bottom of the first as they went on to match the Bears' five runs behind two errors, four hits, and a walk while leaving two runners on base.
• The hosts tacked on one more in third before their offense exploded in the fourth inning as Mark Smith singled, advanced to second on an error and reached third on a wild pitch to start things off and 12-straight players would reach base including a grand-slam for Smith (his second hit of the frame) as part of a 13-run inning.
• The Bears offense sputtered the rest of the way and their five errors came back to bite them as they allowed 19 Mary Washington runs on 16 hits to fall to 0-2 on the young season.

How It Happened (Game 2)

• Mary Washington exhibited timely hitting all day as two RBI doubles in the bottom of the first had them rolling early in game one leading to a five-run opening frame to take control early. They followed it up with another five-run stanza in the second as Smith once again got the inning started by getting on base and recorded an RBI in the same frame to essentially put things away up 10-0 after two.
• The hosts' starting pitcher Christian Hague spun a gem going all seven innings allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out 14 and holding the Bears' scoreless as his offense scored another run in the third and four more in the bottom of the sixth to put the cherry on top of the sweep.

For the Bears

• Gonzalez had the Bears only hit in game two (1-for-3) and he went 1-for-3 in game one while him and Langan each recorded their first two RBI of the year.
• Anthony Palermo (Patchogue, N.Y./Sachem North) was on in game one going 2-for-4 with a run scored and freshman Kyle McLaughlin (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) followed suite finishing 1-for-2 with a double and RBI (both first of career) in the first contest.
• Junior Jonatan Chipoco (Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle) was a bright spot on the mound firing 2.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout in game one.
