Baseball to Play Six Games in Four Days to Wrap Up Spring Break

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Still in search of their first win of the season, the 0-13 St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team is gearing up for a slew of contests in the waning days of the college's Spring Break. On Wednesday (Mar. 28), the Bears take on New Paltz for a single road game and follow with a visit to Baruch a day later for another lone outing. Then, on Friday, SJC reverts back to Skyline play battling Farmingdale State for a doubleheader and conclude the week hosting SUNY Poly for a twin-bill on Saturday.

at New Paltz

• New Paltz enters play at 6-6 on the season and has yet to play a SUNYAC opponent. Most recently, they traveled to Florida for their 2018 Spring Break trip (Mar. 16-20) totaling a 4-4 record along the way. The Hawks swept Hamilton to open the trip (7-1, 8-2) and later picked up an impressive win over #11 Washington and Jefferson (10-5), while their final victory came against Babson (7-2). New Paltz's lineup currently features five players batting .300 or better, led by Anthony Pantano's .375 mark. Pantano tops the squad in hits (15), doubles (4), triples (2), total bases (23), slugging (.575), and OBP (.432). On the mound, Anthony Amaroso has been the most consistent arm, boasting a 1.00 ERA and 2-0 record in three appearances (one start), while striking out seven and allowing a meager .200 batting average against. This is the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

• Baruch has had a similar start to the season as St. Joseph's, sputtering out to a 3-12-1 start. Their last contest saw them fall to CUNYAC opponent CCNY by a final score of 8-5 despite a 2-for-4 line (2 RBI) from designated hitter JP Ramirez. Before that, they lost a single outing to USMMA, preceded by a 0-2 doubleheader against Maritime to give the Bearcats a four-game losing streak. Ramirez has been on a tear to open 2018, hitting .419 with three doubles, eight RBI, and a .516 slugging percentage. Right behind him are Liam O'Gara (.385, 20 hits) and Edwin St. Hilaire who leads BC in doubles (5) and RBI (14), giving them a few offensive weapons. Their pitching staff has struggled mightily thus far, currently holding a 6.52 ERA and .321 BAA. SJC is 6-7 all-time versus Baruch winning last year's meeting 13-7 (Apr. 18).

• Farmingdale has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign standing at 10-3 (2-0 SKY) at midweek. They are additionally riding a five-game win streak having won seven of their last 10. Last Saturday (Mar. 24), the Rams swept Mount Saint Vincent in a Skyline doubleheader (11-0, 6-1) powered by a 6-for-7 day (5 RBI) from first baseman Ernie Geraci. Geraci, a sophomore, has been a force to be reckoned with in the FSC lineup leading them (including ties) in batting (.436), hits (17), doubles (2), triples (1), RBI (8), OBP (.477), and slugging (.538). Behind him are four other players hitting at least .300 as the team boasts a .276 total average. Senior hurler David Otero Jr. has been lights out thus far, allowing zero earned runs in 15 innings pitched with a 1-0 record (1 save, 19 K). The Bears are 1-4 all-time against FSC, but won the most recent matchup, the second game of a doubleheader, 4-3 (Apr. 9, 2017).

• The Wildcats currently sit at 5-5 on the year with all their games to this point coming at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida (Mar. 4-9). They opened play on a four-game win streak sweeping Westminster (2-1, 11-8) and Nebraska Wesleyan (7-5, 16-15) in respective doubleheaders. However, the slowed up in the final four showdowns losing two each to Medaille and Wentworth. Junior outfielder Dalton Earl has been Poly's catalyst to this point, as he ranks first on the team in runs (7), doubles (tied - 2), and slugging (.632), while accumulating eight hits, a triple, five RBI, and a .500 OBP. In two starts senior John Noone (1-1) has been a bright spot, striking out seven over 13 innings posting a 2.77 ERA. This is the third-ever meeting between SJC and Poly with the series tied 1-1.
