Baseball Readies for Five-Straight Road Games Over Four Days

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — After their presumed final home games of the season were postponed this past Sunday, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team prepares for five-straight away contests, beginning with a single game tomorrow (Apr. 18) at New Jersey City. Then, on Friday (Apr. 20), the Bears take on Yeshiva for a Skyline doubleheader and conclude the road trip with a twin-bill at league opponent Mount Saint Mary on Saturday (Apr. 21).

  • The Bears (3-23, 1-9 Skyline) traveled to Throggs Neck last Saturday (Apr. 14) for a conference doubleheader against Maritime, just after picking up their third win of the season last Wednesday (Apr. 11) versus New Rochelle. The Privateers took both games of the Skyline set, first with a 5-1 game victory led by an eight-inning gem from Dylan Clausen (8 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 9 K). Then, in game two, Maritime's usually powerful offense caught stride, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits to secure a seven-run win.
  • New Jersey City (15-10, 5-5 NJAC) comes in at 2-2 in their last four games having split back-to-back conference doubleheaders. Most recently, the Gothic Knights battle Stockton on the road (Apr. 14), falling 7-0 in game one and then taking the second outing 7-2 behind a 2-for-3 performance from center fielder Mike Ramirez (1 R, 2 RBI). Before that, they took on Ramapo on back-to-back days (Apr. 12-13), winning the road edition 6-2 and losing at home by double-digits (13-2). Before hosting the Bears, NJCU travels to SJC Long Island for a non-league twin-bill (Apr. 17).

Keys to the Contest

  • Junior infielder Adam Schwartz (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner) enters play as the owner of a four-game hitting streak, highlighted by a three-hit, three-run showing in the win over New Rochelle. Schwartz also leads the team in hitting (.337), stolen bases (10), and runs (17), as he's been an effective catalyst in the leadoff spot all year long. The Bears' strongest starting pitcher, Andrew Watters (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian), will presumably receive a start during the road trip. Although the pitching staff has struggled this season, he leads the squad in innings pitched (33.1), wins (tied, 1), strikeouts (22), and ERA (4.59).
  • The Gothic Knights boast a potent lineup that currently ranks second in the NJAC in batting average (.300) as one of just two teams in the league hitting at least .300. Individually, their lineup features four .300+ hitters led by junior shortstop Nick LoGatto and his .369 mark. On the contrary, the NJCU pitching staff hasn't been nearly as dominant, ranking in the bottom half of the conference in team ERA (5.14). Additionally, with it being a non-conference matchup tomorrow, SJC probably won't see one of their top pitchers so it could be a chance for a quality offensive showing.

History

  • The Bears are 0-6 in the all-time series and dropped last year's showdown 6-5 (Apr. 12, 2017).

  • Yeshiva (3-14, 0-12 Skyline) has had a tough 2018 campaign thus far and have lost four games in a row in the form of two Skyline doubleheaders. On Sunday (Apr. 15), the Macs hosted Merchant Marine and were outscored 42-4 across the two outings, dropping both. Two days earlier they traveled to Farmingdale and saw a less lopsided, but similar, result losing 17-3 and 10-3 respectively. However, last week (Apr. 9-11) Yeshiva compiled a three-game winning streak for their first three triumphs of the season, downing Vaughn in a one-game meeting and then sweeping Valley Forge in a two-game set. Before they battle the Bears, YU hosts John Jay for a non-league doubleheader (Apr. 17).

Keys to the Contest

  • The Macs are the only team in the Skyline that St. Joseph's hits better than, as their .205 batting average ranks last in the league. Despite this, senior shortstop Shmuli Goldis has shined thus far, leading the team with a .360 average, 18 hits, and seven RBI (tied). Yeshiva's hurlers have faced similar struggles in 2018, as they sit last in the league in team ERA (12.77) as well. Their top arm is sophomore Sonny Braha, who is first on the squad with a 5.24 ERA and fanned eight over seven innings while allowing just two hits, one run, and two walks in a win over Valley Forge.

History

  • SJC is 17-1 all-time against Yeshiva and has won 15-straight with their last loss in the series coming in 2009.

  • Mount Saint Mary (16-7, 8-2 Skyline) has been one of the best teams in the Skyline this season and are currently first in the league standings. In fact, they have won five games in a row to propel them nine games over .500 on the year. Their last outing was a doubleheader against third-place Merchant Marine in which the Knights earned the sweep with 7-1 and 4-2 victories, highlighted by a 4-for-4 line (4 RBI) from first baseman Chris Introcaso. Previously they had swept CCNY in a non-conference set and downed New Rochelle in a single, midweek outing. Before playing St. Joseph's, MSMC travels to Purchase for another Skyline doubleheader (Apr. 17).

Keys to the Contest

  • Introcaso's .333 batting average to date ranks just third on the team, as the Knights' roster is chock full of quality bats. Rookie middle infielder Stephen Mirra is the team's top hitter with a .405 mark, which also ranks third in the entire Skyline. Introcaso does find himself among the league leaders, however, as his 26 RBI come in at third. These statistics don't even take into account sophomore Anthony Rizzo, as he sits at second on the team with a .375 average and tied for second in the Skyline for least strikeouts with just three on the year. Moral of the story; Mount Saint Mary can flat-out hit.

History

  • The Knights lead the all-time series 6-2 and the teams split last season's doubleheader (Apr. 29, 2017).
