Baseball Falls to NYU at MCU Park

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Senior Anthony Palermo (Patchogue, N.Y./Sachem North) recorded his second-straight multi-hit game and drove in the lone run for St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) (11-17-1) in a 6-1 non-conference loss to New York University (16-9) on Wednesday afternoon at MCU Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones.

The Violets plated a solo run in the bottom of the first with a two-out single by Jack Elias that scored Ryan McLaughlin from second after singling two batters earlier.

A fast-moving affair saw the Bears held to just one hit through five as NYU tacked on another run in the fourth and a pair in the fifth to pad their lead to 4-0 before St. Joseph's got on the board in the sixth against the NYU relief with Palermo driving a two-out double to left that scored Adam Schwartz (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) from first for the Bears' lone run.

The hosts countered with two in the bottom half of the inning on just one hit to cap the scoring at 6-1 with Louis Lombardi (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and William DeLuca (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) tossing scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth to maintain the deficit.

Making his first career start on the mound, senior Matthew Rienzi (Maspeth, N.Y./Xavier) was stuck with the loss allowing one run over a career-long three innings of work, scattering three hits, striking out two and walking none.
