Reyes Unloads for Six RBI as Baseball Races Past Lehman

BRONX, N.Y. — Entering the game as winners of three of their last four, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team (14-17-1) took down Lehman College (9-22) for their third-straight victory behind a 3-for-5 night with six RBI, a home run, and a double from junior outfielder Kevin Reyes (Bronx, N.Y./AECI).

How It Happened

Catcher Michael Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) led off the game with a single to right, stole second, and was driven home on a base knock from Reyes for the game's first run as the Bears held a 1-0 advantage after the first.

Junior William DeLuca (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) launched a solo homer to center in the second and Reyes hit a two-run double in the third extending the Bears' lead, while senior righty Matthew Rienzi (Maspeth, N.Y./Xavier) hurled the first three innings for SJC allowing just two hits with no runs, no walks, and a strikeout.

Rookie outfielder Chris Zinser (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) singled and later stole home in the fourth and Lehman remained scoreless as St. Joseph's sat ahead 5-0 entering the fifth. A tough defensive inning for the Lightning gave the Bears four scores in the sixth on two walks, two errors, a hit batter, and bunt single to break the game open leading 9-0 after five and a half.

Lehman got in the scoring column after a pair of walks and a fielder's choice scoring Michael Zerbo, and they tacked on another run in the eighth, but they couldn't close the gap as SJC picked up an 11-2 triumph moving their record to 4-0 against the CUNYAC this season.

For the Bears

  • Ryan finished 3-for-5 scoring three times with a stolen base in the leadoff spot and Adam Schwartz (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) went 3-for-6 with a run and a steal batting second.
  • Freshman Louis Lombardi (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) earned his first collegiate victory in relief going four innings with one hit, one run, two walks, and five strikeouts.
  • Deluca (2 RBI, HR, R) and Matthew Trudden (Broad Channel, N.Y./Christ the King) each had two hits while Zinser stole two bases and scored twice.
  • Vincent Juliano (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) fired two innings on the mound giving up one hit, no earned runs, and two walks with a strikeout.
