Three Bears Record Three Hits as Baseball Handles John Jay

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team (15-17-1) hosted John Jay College (12-24) in a single non-conference outing at Calvert Vaux Park on Wednesday, extending their all-time win streak against the Bloodhounds to 15 games with a 12-3 victory as four players recorded multi-hit games and sophomore C.J. Bunnicelli (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) picked up his second win of the year on the mound. The Bears won their fourth-straight contest, and fifth in their last six, improving their record to 5-0 against the CUNYAC this season.

How It Happened

The Bears opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on a William DeLuca (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) solo shot to left for his team-high fifth long-ball of the season (2nd Skyline). John Jay answered immediately with runners at second and third with two outs in the third and an RBI single from Sean Napier followed by an SJC error put the visitors ahead 2-1.

Michael Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) cranked a one-out double in the bottom of inning three and Adam Schwartz (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) stepped up next with a base hit setting up a two-run single from team RBI leader Anthony Palermo (Patchogue, N.Y./Sachem North) to put the Bears back on top (3-2) after three.

A pair of John Jay errors, a hit batsman, and an RBI single from Ryan led to three runs in St. Joseph's half of the fourth giving them a comfortable 6-2 advantage. The Bloodhounds cut the deficit to three on a Steven Catuogno two-bagger in the next frame, but Ryan and Palermo drove in another run each in the sixth and the Bears added four more scores in the seventh to put the game away.

• Ryan (3-for-6, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B), Schwartz (3-for-6, 2 R, RBI), and Dominick Caputo (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) (3-for-4, 2 R, RBI, 2B) all had a trio of hits in the win.
• Palermo finished with two hits and a team-high three RBI while Kevin Reyes (Bronx, N.Y./AECI) drove in two runs himself.
• Bunnicelli fired 6.2 strong innings with six hits, three runs, and just one walk fanning five.
• Seniors J.J. McLaughlin (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) and Daniel Egan (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) both had scoreless relief appearances.
