Old Westbury Sinks Baseball in Series-Opening Doubleheader

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team (0-4, 0-2 Skyline) dropped their series-opening twin bill against the College at Old Westbury (2-0, 2-0 Skyline), 15-5, and 16-1, on Saturday afternoon from the SJC Outdoor Field Complex.

Game 1: Old Westbury 15, St. Joseph's 5

  • The Panthers opened the scoring with six runs in the first two innings – headlined by homers off the bats of John DellOlio and Oscar Fajardo – before Nick Tapio's RBI double grabbed a pair of runs back in the Bears' half of the second.

  • William DeLuca's RBI double of his own in the third cut the deficit to three, 6-3.

  • Louis Lombardi came on, with two outs in the second, to pitch three scoreless innings in middle relief for freshman righty Andrew Monda (0-2), who dropped his second straight decision.

  • Old Westbury further distanced themselves courtesy of Fajardo's second home run of the game in the top of the sixth, seeing their lead grow to 10-3.

  • Chris Leary's double down the left-field line in the next half-inning brought in a run; the only Bear to have a multi-hit game going 2-5 at the plate.

  • A bases-loaded walk to Thomas Airey brought in SJC's second run of the frame before a five-run top of the seventh extended the Panthers' lead, resulting in the 15-5 final.

Game 2: Old Westbury 16, St. Joseph's 1

  • Old Westbury commanded the lead from the opening inning, carrying a 9-0 advantage into the bottom of the fifth.

  • Lucas Collet's double in the Bears' half of the fifth was their first hit of the contest. He scored on a Nick Tapio sac fly, who notched three RBI over the two games.

  • TJ Moussette joined Collet as the only players on the hit column with a leadoff single in the sixth.

  • The Panthers sealed the 16-1 victory thanks to a four-run sixth inning and a three-run seventh.

  • Matt McHugh (0-2) started on the bump for the Bears, striking out four batters, before being pulled after 4.1 innings.
