Baseball Drops High-Scoring Affair to Lehman
BRONX, N.Y. — Despite holding a commanding lead both early on and late in their Wednesday night non-conference game, the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) suffered a 16-15 defeat to Lehman College.
Chris Leary (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) and Carmine Carbone (Middle Village, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) each had three hits while the Bears trio of Lucas Collet (Toulouse, France/Lyc'ee Bellevue), Louis Lombardi (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep), and Alex Goldberg (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) had a pair of base knocks each.
Nicholas Mirabella (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) made his first collegiate start on the mound, tossing three innings and striking out four Lehman bats. He settled for the no-decision.
How it Happened
In the first inning with two outs, TJ Moussette (Centereach,N.Y./Newfield) singled deep into center field, bringing in two runs to start the scoring. A double steal followed, with Moussette successfully stealing second base and Sean Schneeberg (Columbia, Tenn./Del Oro) scoring. Moussette and Goldberg later scored in the inning, while Leary crossed the plate in the second, giving SJBK a 6-0 lead after two innings.
Lehman managed to score a run in the third inning, reducing the deficit to 6-1. The Lightning turned the tables with two massive six-run stanzas in the fourth and fifth innings to change the score from down 6-1 to leading 13-6.
After two scoreless innings, the Bears' offense came to life again in the eighth inning. Trailing 13-7, consecutive RBI doubles from Michael Gardener (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and Schneeberg, along with a Lombardi single, narrowed the deficit to 13-10. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Mike Medina Jr. (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) hit a double that split the left-center field gap, bringing in all three runners and tying the game at 13-13. Lombardi then singled, bringing in two more runs in the top of the ninth, giving the navy and gray a 15-13 lead.
However, in the bottom of the ninth, the hosts scored two runs, leveling the game at 15-15. With the Bears loading the bases through an intentional walk, a sacrifice fly allowed Lehman to score the game-winning run, securing their victory.
