Maritime Sails Past Bears
THROGGS NECK, NY – St. Joseph's College men's basketball (1-4) dropped a 76-34 non-conference decision at the hands of Maritime College (2-1) on Tuesday evening. Freshman Cesar Madera led the Bears with nine points and three steals.
Maritime hit a three-pointer on their second possession to take a 3-2 lead and never looked back. They extended their lead to 10 points halfway through the opening frame then St. Joseph's went on a 7-0 run capped by a Mike Dziewit (Ridgewood, NY/Wadleigh) trifecta to trail 21-18 that prompted a Maritime timeout. That would be the closest the Bears would get as the offense stalled going scoreless over the final 8:25 allowing Maritime to close the half on a 13-0 run and remaining firmly in control throughout the second half.
Dziewit finished with seven points and pulled down a team-high tying four rebounds. Junior Jon Matzelle (Maspeth, NY/St. Francis Prep) chipped in six points and three rebounds.
Shamair Williams led three Privateers in double-digits, scoring a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds.
St. Joseph's returns to action after the Thanksgiving break to face New Jersey City University in a non-conference road matchup on Monday, November 30. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center in Jersey City, NJ.
