Megafu and Escobedo Rack Up Awards From AD3I and HVIAC

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Sophomore Michael Megafu (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) has been named the Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) and Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) men's basketball Player of the Week, while freshman teammate Francisco Escobedo (El Paso, Texas/Santa Teresa) received HVIAC Rookie of the Week after the duo helped lead the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's basketball team to a victory over archrivals St. Joseph's College (L.I.) on Saturday.

Megafu continued his impressive play on the year, recording his fifth double-double of the season as the Bears defeated St. Joseph's (L.I.), 80-77, in a thrilling back-and-forth contest. The sophomore poured in a team-high 27 points on a blistering 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) shooting from the floor while securing 10 rebounds.

The guard/forward showed off all facets of his game going a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, nailing each one at critical points in the game for St. Joseph's. Megafu also went 6-of-8 (75 percent) from the charity stripe and had two rejections on the night as the Bears improved to 5-5 with the win.

The sophomore now leads the team averaging 14.1 points per game and 9.2 caroms per game while shooting an efficient 53.7 percent from the floor on the year.

Escobedo hit two crucial free throws with 17 seconds left that gave the Bears an 80-77 lead over the Golden Eagles that they held on to for the victory. The freshman guard scored six points as a reserve, shooting 4-for-4 from the charity stripe, grabbed three rebounds and handed out an assist.

Megafu earns his second Player of the Week accolade from both AD3I and HVIAC while Escobedo earns Rookie of the Week for the first time in his career. Megafu follows junior teammate David Louison (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) who won AD3I and HVIAC Player of the Week a week ago. Escobedo becomes the first Bear to take home Rookie of the Week honors this season.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Friday, December 27th taking on HVIAC rivals Berkeley College at the Barclays Center with tip-off set for 3 p.m.
