Megafu Tabbed to D3Hoops.com All-Atlantic Region Second Team
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's basketball sophomore forward Michael Megafu (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) added to his growing list of postseason accolades when he was named to the D3hoops.com 2014 men's basketball All-Atlantic Region Second Team earlier today.
Megafu, the only sophomore honored, becomes the first men's basketball player in St. Joseph's history to earn the accolade, but is not the first Bear to be recognized by D3Sports.com as junior David Louison (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) was named Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year two seasons ago. Also, baseball's Joe Mendez earned First Team All-New York Region honors from D3baseball.com a year ago.
The sophomore was also a USCAA Second Team All-American selection, the AD3I Co-Player of the Year and member of the All-Independent First Team and was a HVIAC All-Conference Team recipient.
Megafu had a monster season for the Bears, finishing with a team-high 17 double-doubles (No. 8 in Division III) on the season. The forward averaged a career-high 17.0 points per game and corralled a team-high 10.5 boards per game (No. 32 in Division III). The two-time USCAA Player of the Week led the Bears in scoring nine times and rebounding a team-high 17 times and had eight contests of 20 or more points.
The three-time AD3I and two-time HVIAC Player of the Week finished the season with 172 made field goals, 283 total rebounds (No. 24 in Division III), 460 points and shot 56.4 percent from the floor. Megafu was a key contributor in St. Joseph's 18 wins, averaging 18.7 points per game on 61.8 percent shooting and 10.2 rebounds per game. The forward also had a streak midway through the season of eight consecutive double-doubles which was tied for the third longest in NCAA Division III at the time. The sophomore is currently the highest ranked sophomore among the NCAA Division III active career leaders in double-doubles, coming in at No. 12 overall with 32.
Players were nominated for these awards by the Sports Information Directors at the various schools.
