NEWARK, NJ – Following their crushing overtime defeat at the hands of St. Joseph’s College, Long Island Saturday night, the Bears schedule didn’t provide any breaks as they traveled to Newark, NJ to take on Division I NJIT. The Bears were able to hang with the home team for a while, but in the end the Highlanders were too much, disposing the Bears 78-50.

Bears Lose Overtime Heartbreaker to Golden Eagles
BROOKLYN, NY – Forty minutes wasn’t enough to decide the nightcap in the East Meets West tripleheader. The Bears and Golden Eagles needed overtime to declare a winner. The Golden Eagles were able to put up 19 points in the extra five minutes to take the win, 86-77. The loss puts the Bears back under .500 at 4-5 for the season.

Bears Open Conference Play with Win at Culinary

The undefeated streaks ended there though, as the Bears fell to the Knights, 70-69, Saturday night, in a HVMAC contest that came down to the final seconds. BROOKLYN, NY – Trailing by 17 with 10:27 left to play, the St. Joseph’s went on a 21-4 run to tie Lehman College (3-5) 68-68 with 2:43 remaining, however the Lightning pulled away in the closing minutes to defeat the Bears 78-71 on Saturday night at Brooklyn Technical High School. McQuillan Named AD3I Rookie of the Year, Maddox and Gist Named Second Team All-Independent
(KANSAS CITY, MO) Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep), a freshman point guard for the St. Joseph’s College women’s basketball team, was named the Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) rookie of the year in press releases released by the conference earlier this week naming the 2009 All-Independent Basketball Teams. McQuillan also was named to the second team all-independent. On the men’s side, senior Ervin Maddox (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s) and sophomore Justin Gist (Brooklyn, NY/Newsome) were also named to the second team all-independent.

Bears Comeback in HVMAC Championship Falls Short
(BRONXVILLE, NY) St. Joseph’s was unable to overcome a 13 point second-half deficit in a 75-71 loss to Berkeley College in the Hudson Valley Men’s Athletic Conference Championship held at Sarah Lawrence College on Sunday afternoon. Both teams have squared off for the HVMAC title the past four years with St. Joseph’s entering each tournament as the regular season champion, but Berkeley snatched away the title from the Bears for the third time. St. Joseph’s has not lost to Berkeley in the last 14 regular season meetings.

Bears Basketball Season Preview
The wait is finally over. After four straight Hudson Valley Men’s Athletic Conference regular season titles only to repeatedly falter in the championship game, the Bears finally captured the HVMAC title that has eluded them for so long. “Although we finally won last year, the goal hasn’t changed,” says 2008 HVMAC Coach of the Year, Joseph Cocozello. “Our primary goal for this season is to repeat as Hudson Valley Champions. Secondly, we would like to get our seniors back to the USCAA National Tournament.”
