BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph’s men’s basketball team kicked off a stretch of five straight HVMAC games with a convincing win over the Culinary Institute of America, 80-51. Four players scored in double figures and senior Jon Matzelle (Maspeth, NY/St. Francis Prep) played 20 minutes in his first game since the January 5th game at the Prudential Center. The Bears improve to 4-13 on the year and are 2-0 in conference play.

Bears Comeback Falls Short Against Division I NJIT
NEWARK, NJ - Trailing 36-19 after one half, it looked like the St. Joseph’s men’s basketball team was in for a repeat of last season’s 42 point loss at Division I New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). But Donald Coleman (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth) helped bring the Bears back into the game with a 14 point second half. Senior Ervin Maddox (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s) led St. Joseph’s with 16 points and was the only Bear to register in double figures.

Bears Open HVMAC Campaign Manhandling Pratt
The Bears began the defense of their HVMAC title travelling down Willoughby Ave to for an easy 82-46 win over Pratt Institute. The backcourt duo of Justin Gist (Brooklyn, NY / Newsome) and Ervin Maddox (Staten Island / St. Peter’s) led St. Joseph’s netting 15 and 11 points respectively.

Bears Comeback Attempt Against Mount Saint Vincent In Home Opener Falls Short
Senior Ervin Maddox (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s) scored a team-high 23 points and sophomore Justin Gist(Brooklyn, NY / Newsome) added 18 points and nine rebounds in a 88-79 loss to Mount Saint Vincent in front of a near sellout crowd for the Men’s Basketball home opener on Monday night at Brooklyn Technical High School.

Men’s Basketball Takes Runner-Up in Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament
The Bears Basketball team travelled to Cresson, PA for the Altoona Regional Health System Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament to open the 2008-09 season. St. Joseph’s beat the host Mount Aloysius Mounties on Saturday in the opening round 88-86 and lost to Catholic University of America 43-88 in the championship game on Sunday to capture 2nd Place.

Bears Basketball Season Preview
The wait is finally over. After four straight Hudson Valley Men’s Athletic Conference regular season titles only to repeatedly falter in the championship game, the Bears finally captured the HVMAC title that has eluded them for so long. “Although we finally won last year, the goal hasn’t changed,” says 2008 HVMAC Coach of the Year, Joseph Cocozello. “Our primary goal for this season is to repeat as Hudson Valley Champions. Secondly, we would like to get our seniors back to the USCAA National Tournament.”
