Men's Soccer Stonewalled by York (N.Y.)

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team suffered an 8-0 setback to York College (N.Y.) in their season opener on Tuesday afternoon at Aviator Field.

St. Joseph's (0-1) was overpowered by the York (2-3) attack from the onset of the game with Bears junior goalkeeper Michael Miner (Schenevus, N.Y./Schenevus) being peppered with shots as the Cardinals held a 22-3 advantage in shots on goal while St. Joseph's had no answer for the pressure applied by the Cardinals.

York drew first blood in the 8th minute of action when Rohan Burrell took a long pass down the sideline from Remi Molake finding the left corner of the net. St. Joseph's applied pressure after surrendering the first goal of the game as freshman Giuseppe Porretto (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) recorded the first shot on goal of his career but the Bears offensive chances would be hard to come by.

St. Joseph's defense held its own for nearly 15 minutes before Brian Broadbelt took a free kick and shot it past Miner in the 22nd minute to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage.

Burrell tallied his second goal of the night in the 26th minute before Andre Adelson tacked on another in the 32nd minute to give York a 4-0 lead.

In the final few minutes before halftime the Bears had their best scoring opportunity when junior Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) fired a shot on goalkeeper Leszek Stankiewicz who made a nice save that ended up being a corner kick for St. Joseph's. On the ensuing corner kick, senior Adam Comollo (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery HS) would force Stankiewicz to make another save before Urshela took the rebound from in front of the net and sent the shot wide.

Adelson would add on his second goal of the day taking a pass into the box by Michael Delgado and dribbling past a Bears defender and firing a shot that found its way in the back of the net to give York a commanding 5-0 lead.

The Cardinals would tack on three more goals including the second of the day by Broadbelt who fired a free kick past Miner in the 74th minute.

Miner finished with 14 saves and absorbed the loss in net.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Monday, September 23rd looking for their first win of the season against Medgar Evers at the Aviator Sports Complex. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
