Men's Soccer Overwhelmed by Lehman

BRONX, N.Y. – Junior Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) scored his second goal of the season but that would not be enough as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team dropped a 9-1 decision to Lehman College on Monday night in the Bronx.

St. Joseph's (0-5) has now lost five in a row to begin the season while Lehman (4-7) snaps a two-game losing streak.

The Bears were overwhelmed from the beginning as the Lightning took advantage of St. Joseph's having only ten players, holding a 52-5 advantage in shots for the game.

Lehman struck early with their first goal coming in the 2nd minute off a pass from across the box that was put in the net by Momar Thiam who finished the match with a hat-trick.

Thiam would break through again in the 15th minute for the Lightning when he fired a rocket of a shot from 22 yards out that found its way past St. Joseph's junior goalkeeper Michael Miner (Schenevus, N.Y./Schenevus) to give Lehman a 2-0 advantage.

The Lightning tacked on three more goals in the half including the third of the night by Thiam in the 26th minute giving Lehman a commanding 5-0 lead heading into the break.

Lehman dominated the action in the first half holding a 23-3 shots advantage forcing Miner to make eight saves in the period.

The beginning of the second stanza was a repeat of the first as the Lightning continued to bombard Miner with shots before picking up their sixth goal of the night in the 50th minute when Emmanuel Adesanlu headed in the ball off a corner by Ronniel Mendez giving Lehman a 6-0 lead.

The Bears put together an offensive march in the 57th minute and ended the shutout when Urshela found the back of the net. Urshela finished the night as St. Joseph's leader on offense firing a team-high three shots with two on net.

The Lightning concluded their scoring with three more goals including two off the foot of Brian Amaya.

Miner finished the night making 19 saves, one shy of a career-high and took the loss. Sophomores Kyle Johnson (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) and Matthew O'Neill (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) each tallied a shot for the Bears.

Alejandro Romero picked up the win for Lehman making one save.

St. Joseph's concludes their six-game roadstand to begin the season when they face Sarah Lawrence on Wednesday, October 2nd at 8 p.m.
