Men's Soccer Fails to Overcome Early Deficit in 3-1 Loss to Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Medgar Evers jumped ahead on the scoreboard less than two minutes into the game and would not relinquish their lead as they defeated the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) men's soccer team, 3-1 at the Aviator Complex Monday night.

The Bears (1-3) have now dropped their third consecutive game, while the Cougars (3-2) notched their second straight victory.

The game's scoring was opened up just two minutes into the game, when Zeakiel Daley netted the goal coming off a sideline throw-in from Patrick Gentles for the early 1-0 advantage. Mamadou Kone would add to the Medgar Evers lead with a goal in the 14th minute off a breakaway from midfield.

In the second half, Osondu Esonwune extended the advantage to three goals in the 52nd minute after a previously blocked shot attempt. The Bears finally got on the board following a foul kick at the 59th minute when Thomas Homier (Middleton, Del. Middletown) scored his second goal of the season.

St. Joseph's outshot the Cougars, 17-13 for the game, edging Medgar Evers 10-6 in the first half and both teams were even at seven shots apiece for the second half. The Cougars held a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kicks during the contest.

Goalie Kedric Flemius secured the victory for the Cougars, stopping eight shots while Michael Miner (Schenevus, N.Y./Schenevus) took the loss for St. Joseph's making three saves.

The Bears look to break their three-game losing streak on Thursday, Sept. 25 when they take on York (N.Y.) at 7 p.m at the Aviator Complex.
