Men's Soccer Wins Second Straight in Shutout of Sarah Lawrence

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team displayed a strong performance on defense as they shut out Sarah Lawrence, 3-0 on Friday night at the Aviator Sports and Events Center.

With the win, the Bears (6-5) are now a game above .500 and have nearly matched their program's total of victories in just this season.

Michael Ortiz (Bushwick, N.Y./Christ the King Regional) netted his second goal of the season, while Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) scored his seventh of the year to add to his all-time record of 31. Nolan Parr (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) tallied his second goal in as many games to cap off the scoring.

Michael Miner (Schneveus, N.Y./Schneveus) made four saves for his second shutout of the season while James Berry stopped nine shots for the Gryphons (2-11) in a losing cause.

the Bears did not allow Sarah Lawrence a shot with their stellar defensive play in the first half. During the 16th minute, Ortiz made a great individual effort after a pass from Pandeli Mano (Bayside, N.Y./Bayside High School) to put it past the goalkeeper. Urshela would notch a score in the 32nd minute after putting back his own rebound following a Berry save.

In the second half, St. Joseph's continued their defensive effort, rarely letting the Gryphons into their territory. Parr scored his second career goal in the 77th minute on the rebound following an attempted Urshela bicycle kick that hit off the crossbar.

The Bears outshot the Gryphons 26-4, including 14-0 in the first half. They also took more corner kicks with a 15-6 advantage.

St. Joseph's will look for their third consecutive win when they return to the pitch on Sunday as the second part of a doubleheader against Washington Adventist at 4:00 p.m. The team will celebrate Senior Day honoring the careers of Michael Miner, Raul Urshela, Vinny Rossi, Marco Fuentes and Francis Civitano as well as play the second of their Stomach Cancer Awareness Games.
