Men’s Soccer Hangs Tough With Berkeley But Drops One-Goal Decision in Opener

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Freshman Matthias Spiegel (Wedel, Germany/Clovis H.S.) netted his first collegiate goal, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team couldn't overcome a two-goal deficit, falling 2-1 to former HVIAC rivals Berkeley College (N.Y.) in a non-conference affair on Wednesday evening in their 2015 season opener at Aviator Field.

How It Happened

  • Berkeley capitalized on a Bears miscue in the 10th minute when Aboubacar Sogoba put away a turnover from inside the SJC box.
  • Victor Marotta gave the Knights a 2-0 lead late in the half finishing a cross from Solomon Ahanaonu for the eventual game winner.
  • With just over a minute before halftime, Matthias Spiegel turned in a great individual effort stealing a ball from near midfield and took all the way sending the Bears into the lockers just down one, despite being outshot 8-3 in the frame.
  • Both teams found more opportunities as play opened up in the second stanza combining for 18 shots and nine coming on frame, but the Bears couldn't find the equalizer on their seven second-half shots.
