Maritime Slips Away With 1-0 Decision Over Men's Soccer

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In a close Skyline Conference matchup between two teams trying to clinch a spot in the post-season tournament, Maritime College scored less than one minute into the second half and handed St. Joseph's College a 1-0 defeat on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Maritime 1, St. Joseph's 0
  • Records: Purchase (7-8, 3-5 Skyline), St. Joseph's (6-9, 4-5 Skyline)
  • Location: Staten Island, N.Y. – CSI Soccer Complex

How It Happened

  • The game was deadlocked over the opening 45 with the Bears controlling much of the action with an 11-6 advantage in shots and 5-2 edge in corners.
  • Maritime had a good opportunity to score first when a hand ball in the box granted a shot from the penalty spot in the 37th minute, but freshman goalkeeper Julian Rodriguez made the save to keep the game scoreless. Rodriguez would finish with five saves in the half as the Privateers made the most of their six shots with five coming on target.
  • In the opening minute of the second stanza, the Privateers broke through for the game's lone goal. A ball played from the midfield forced Rodriguez to come off his line but was unable to secure the ball at the top of the box. With the freshman on the ground, Parker Gallt collected the loose ball and chipped it over the retreating defense for the game-winner.
  • With the lead, Maritime upped the pressure and gained three more scoring opportunities in succession, but Rodriguez lived up to the task and made three of his six saves in the half to maintain the one-goal deficit.
  • The Bears fired off eight shots in the half searching for the equalizer and gained a good opportunity earning a corner in the 87th minute, but came up empty-handed with the Privateer defense holding them without a shot for the final 11 minutes.
