Men's Soccer Preps for Skyline Opener With Test at Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. — In their final tuneup before opening Skyline Conference play, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team suffered a 6-0 non-conference loss to Manhattanville College on the road on Wednesday evening.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Manhattanville 6, St. Joseph's 0
  • Records: Manhattanville (3-4), St. Joseph's (0-4-1)
  • Location: Purchase, N.Y. — GoValiants.com Field

How it Happened

  • The hosts kept the Bears on the defensive for much of the contest and Oskar Martinsson scored less than five minutes into the contest and added another nine minutes later.
  • St. Joseph's did well to keep the deficit at 2-0 going into intermission, but the Valiants held a 17-1 shot advantage in the opening 45.
  • Manhattanville needed just 3:28 to start the scoring in the second stanza.
  • Rookie Kenneth Garcia (Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) had the closest opportunity for the Bears to spoil the shutout, dribbling the length of the field into space and firing a shot from the outside of top of the box that hit squarely off the upper right corner of the frame.
  • The Valiants found the back of the net three more times in the 54th, 61st and 71st minutes.

For the Bears

  • Garcia led the Bears offense with four shots, one prompting a Valiant save.
  • Mateusz Georges also fired off a pair of shots, but the Bears suffered a 31-9 shot discrepancy for the contest.
  • Making his first career start in goal, freshman Alejandro Oliveros finished with 13 saves.

The Bear Facts

  • This is the first meeting all-time between the two programs.
