Men’s Soccer Picks Up 3-2 Road Win Over Mount Saint Vincent in Skyline Opener

RIVERDALE, N.Y. — Led by a pair of goals from Kenneth Garcia (Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) and the game-winner by Thomas Mastoras (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer (3-6, 1-0 Skyline) never trailed in a 3-2 victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent (1-6 , 0-1 Skyline) on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

SJC kept control for much of the first half, firing off 15 shots while holding the Dolphins to just four attempts. Despite the shot discrepancy, the Bears led by only one at the intermission, off Garcia's tally in the in the 34th minute finishing off a feed from Joseph Sepulveda (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside)

The hosts were unable to tilt the field back in their favor in the second stanza as the Bears continued to get the better of the scoring opportunities and led 13-7 in shots. Garcia struck again burying a free kick with just over 30 minutes left to give the navy and white a two-goal cushion.

The Dolphins finally got one in the cage 10 minutes later with Derrick Cordova cutting St. Joseph's advantage to one, 2-1. Mastoras added a much-needed insurance goal in the 75th minute as Cordova responded less than four minutes later to bring another one-goal game.

For the Bears

  • Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) made four saves to pick up the win in net.
  • Garcia's two-goal effort was his third multi-goal game of the season and he leads all Skyline scorers with nine tallies.
  • Mateusz Georges (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) fired six shots, with four coming on goal.
  • Mastoras also launched five shots and his goal was his second of the season.

  • The victory was the first over the Dolphins in five meetings all time.
  • Mount Saint Vincent was picked to finished tied for fifth by the league's coaches in the preseason poll while the Bears were predicted to finish 10th.
