Men's Soccer Grounded by SJC Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — Sophomore Brandon Georges (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) scored for the second straight game to bring the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team back within one, but sibling rivals St. Joseph's College (Long Island) came away with a 3-1 Skyline Conference victory on Wednesday evening.

How It Happened

Brooklyn (4-1, 1-4 Skyline) controlled the action in the first half maintaining a 15-7 edge in shots, but the game remained deadlocked at 0-0 until the Golden Eagles (6-6-1, 4-2 Skyline) got a late goal from Kyle Conway just before the end of the half to lead 1-0 at the intermission.

Long Island carried the momentum of the late goal into the second as the field tilted in favor of the hosts. Damian Duda put back a rebound in the 68th minute to push the Golden Eagle lead to two, but the Bears responded five minutes later when Thomas Mastoras (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) found Georges with a through ball that cut the deficit back down to one, 2-1, with less than 20 minutes to play.

Brooklyn had a good corner kick opportunity in the 79th minute but Matthias Spiegel's (Wedel, Germany/Clovis) was punched over the bar and Long Island capitalized on a turnover, Duda scoring his second of the game with just over a minute to play to dash any hope of a comeback.

For the Bears

  • Georges goal was his third of the season.
  • Mastoras' helper was his sixth of the season, ranking tied for second among the league leaders.
  • Kenneth Garcia (Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) led all players with eight shots (two on goal)
  • Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) made six saves in a losing effort.
  • The Bears held a slight 23-22 edge in shots and maintained a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Next Up for the Bears

The Bears head to Kings Point for a showdown with Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday (Oct. 13) starting at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on SJCBears.com
