Men’s Soccer Edged by Old Westbury on Senior Day

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Sophomore Mateusz Georges (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) equalized the game in the second half, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 Skyline Conference result to SUNY College at Old Westbury in their home finale at Aviator Field on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened

A strong wind dictated play for much of the game and the Panthers (8-5-4, 4-1-4 Skyline) had the wind at their benefit for the first half and scored the lone goal of the opening 45 with Nick Gino taking a long pass from Eric Ragogna in the 22nd minute.

The Bears (5-14, 1-8 Skyline) got on the board 15 minutes into second half with Kenneth Garcia (Elmhurst, N.Y/Bayside) springing Georges for a break on goal. But the game remained level for only two minutes as Old Westbury intercepted a goalie throw at midfield and Alexander Routledge put away the ensuing rush for the game-winner in the 62nd minute.

Opportunities remained scarce for the Bears to equalize as they were held to just one lone shot by Garcia in the waning minutes that missed wide of goal.

For the Bears

  • Georges scored his seventh goal of the season moving into a tie for the top 10.
  • Garcia padded his league lead in points (38) with his sixth assist of the season.
  • Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) finished with six saves in a losing effort.
  • Matthias Spiegel (Wedel, Germany/Clovis) was honored prior to the game. The senior will finish his career ranked second in program history in games played, games started, and minutes played.

Next up for the Bears

The Bears conclude the inaugural season under Head Coach Adam Brunengo with a road test against Sarah Lawrence College on Wednesday (Oct. 24) at Fleming Field in Yonkers.
