Ndiaye Jr. Notches Second-Half Hat Trick in Men’s Soccer’s First-Ever Victory Over SJC Long Island

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — In an eventful match, which saw a second-half hat trick by Mohamed Ndiaye Jr. (Senegal, West Africa/Washington Irving), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team (3-7-1, 1-2 Skyline) won their first conference game of the season, defeating St. Joseph's College (Long Island) (2-7, 2-3 Skyline), 4-2, on Tuesday night at Aviator Field. The victory was the first in program history against their sibling rivals from Patchogue.

How it Happened

The Bears took control early, outshooting the visiting Golden Eagles 3-1 in the opening 20 minutes of the match. In the 25th minute, sophomore Joseph Sepulveda (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) scored on a direct free-kick that deflected off the Golden Eagle defensive wall and the Bears carried the 1-0 lead into intermission.

Four minutes into the second period, Sepulveda found Ndiaye Jr., who scored on a breakaway, to double the Bears' lead to 2-0. While the Bears never trailed in the contest, their Long Island-rivals would initiate a short-lived comeback bid. Rayneri Ruiz put the Golden Eagles on the board, scoring on a through-ball in the 74th minute. Less than a minute later, the Bears regained the two-goal lead when Ndiaye Jr. scored in front of an empty net, taking advantage of a misplayed ball by the SJC-LI goalkeeper. Ruiz cut the deficit back to one in the 83rd minute, 3-2. Ndiaye Jr. completed his hat trick with a sensational bicycle kick goal in the 87th minute, sealing the two-goal Bears victory.

For the Bears

  • Ndiaye Jr. led the team with six shots. His team-leading three shots on goal all found the back of the net.
  • Sepulveda came in second in shots (4) and shots on goal (2) while providing Ndiaye Jr. with two assists, leading all players.
  • Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) outsaved his rival goalkeeper, 4-2, to pick up the win in goal.
