Mastoras, Sepulveda Score Second Half Goals as Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Yeshiva

PURCHASE, N.Y. — Midfielders Thomas Mastoras (Bayside, N.Y./Francis Lewis) and Joseph Sepulveda (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) provided the scoring as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team (4-8-1, 2-3 Skyline) were on the winning side of a Monday night shutout against Yeshiva University (2-8-1, 0-7-1 Skyline), 2-0, from the campus of Purchase College. The shutout was the second in Skyline Conference play and the first since October 1, 2016, when the Bears defeated then-conference rivals The Sage Colleges 1-0.

How it Happened

In a scoreless first half, Sepulveda ripped a shot that was saved in the 17th minute; proving to be the lone shot on target in the period for the visiting Bears. St. Joe's, however, held a 6-4 advantage on shots in the half; with Sepulveda and Mastoras each taking two.

The opening half-hour of the second period saw more of the same with Sepulveda, Mastoras and Mohamed Ndiaye Jr. (Senegal, West Africa/Washington Irving) combining for ten shot attempts. It wasn't until the 75th minute when Mastoras' goal from 30-yards out broke the deadlock. With eight minutes before fulltime, Sepulveda added an insurance goal when he fired off a shot from 25-yards out, coming off a pass from Matthew De La Cruz (Howard Beach, N.Y./Bayside).

For the Bears

  • Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) came away with five saves as he earned his second-career clean sheet and first of the season.
  • Sepulveda rifled off ten shots with three on target to lead all players.
  • Mastoras finished behind Sepulveda with six shots and two on target.
  • Ndiaye Jr. registered his first assist of the season on Mastoras' 75th-minute goal.
