Men’s Soccer Earns 2-2 Draw vs. Old Westbury on Georges’ Late Equalizer

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team battled back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw against the College of Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon from Panther Park. Joseph Sepulveda (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) put the Bears on the scoresheet in the 74th minute while Mateusz Georges (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) scored the game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation.

How it Happened

In a first half that saw no scoring, the Bears (5-11-2, 3-6-1 Skyline) wouldn't see their first shot of the match until Thomas Mastoras' (Bayside, N.Y./Francis Lewis) brace in the 21st minute. Mastoras took three of the teams' four first-half shots.

Old Westbury (6-9-2, 4-5-1 Skyline) broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute. The Panthers added to their lead when they put away a loose ball in the box six minutes later. Then, in the 74th minute, Mastoras played a through ball to Sepulveda to put the Bears on the board. In the 89th minute, when it seemed that the game was all but over, Georges took a feed from Sepulveda to hit a one-timer, to level the game at two-all.

Neither side was able to break the 2-2 stalemate in overtime, however, Bears took three shots compared to the Panthers' one in the bonus periods combined.

For the Bears

  • Georges led the way with five goals, three of which finding the frame of the goal.
  • Sepulveda's goal brought him to a conference-leading 13 goals.
  • Goalkeeper Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) came up with five saves, as many as his Old Westbury counterpart.
