Volpe and Oliveros Sweep Skyline Men’s Soccer Player of the Week Accolades

NEW YORK — Leading St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) to a thrilling 1-0 victory over Hunter on Saturday evening, Diego Volpe (Long Branch, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) and Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland)  have been selected as the Skyline Conference Men's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon.

Freshman midfielder Volpe scored the game-winning golden goal in double overtime — also his first collegiate goal — firing a shot from 30 yards out that found the upper 90.

Graduate student goalkeeper Oliveros stopped all six shots on goal he saw to preserve the shutout — the second shutout of his collegiate career.

The victory was the first win in double overtime in team history and the first over Hunter in four meetings. Now at 1-1 overall, the Bears will host Medgar Evers on Wednesday, September 15 at Randall's Island Field 75 at 6:30 p.m.
