Men’s Soccer Done In by Manhattanville

NEW YORK — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team fell to Manhattanville College (2-4-0, 1-0-0) on Saturday morning, 4-0, from Randall's Island. The Bears fall to 2-3-1 overall, 0-1-1 in Skyline Conference play.

How it Happened

The Bears and Valiants shared scoring opportunities in the early going with Jesus Cano (Brooklyn, N.Y./Cristo Rey Brooklyn) coming close to giving the Bears the edge in the 12th minute. However, a minute later, Manhattanville got on the board first when a cross found Eli Pardo who flicked it in the goal. The score remained 1-0 going into the intermission.

Three minutes into the second half, Pardo went 1v1 with a defender and gave the visitors their second goal of the game. The Manhattanville junior would complete his hat trick in the 61st minute with a tap-in inside the eight-yard box. George Simpson found the upper right corner of the goal with two minutes left to cap off a 4-0 victory in their conference opener.

For the Bears

  • Of the six shots taken, junior Menzi Simelane (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. Stithians College) led the squad with three, taking them all in the second half.

  • Cano and Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) each had their shots find the target but were saved by the Valiants' keeper. Diego Volpe (Long Branch, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) also attempted a shot.

  • SJC goalies outsaved Manhattanville, 3-2, with Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) registering a pair in 67 minutes of play while Luther Saint-Jean (Port-au-Price, Haiti/Origins High School) came up with the Bears' third save.
