Men's Tennis Ends Drought Topping Webb, 6-3

FRESH MEADOWS, N.Y. – Recording their first victory since 2011, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's tennis team defeated Webb Institute, 6-3, in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Tuesday at the Cunningham Park Tennis Center.

The win for the Bears (1-10, 1-2 HVIAC) snaps a 31-match losing streak since defeating City Tech to close the 2011 regular season. St. Joseph's had lost all six previous meetings to Webb (1-5, 1-4 HVIAC) and now move ahead of them in the HVIAC standings in fourth place with two matches remaining.

St. Joseph's took a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition with James Hanophy (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS) and Kevin Caicedo (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) posting an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles followed by Kyle Johnson (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) and Nolan Parr (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) winning their third straight match at No. 2 doubles, 8-3.

Webb leveled the overall match winning at No. 1 singles but the Bears rattled off four straight singles wins to seal the victory. Nick Orlando (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) won his third straight at No. 5 singles, 10-3. Caicedo grinded out a 10-7 victory at No. 2 singles to win his third singles match of the season.

Johnson rebounded from yesterday's tough tiebreak loss, to prevail 10-4 at No. 3 singles that clinched the win for the Bears and also secured his first career singles win. His doubles partner, Parr, continued his hot streak winning his sixth straight match in both singles and doubles with a 10-4 victory at No. 4 singles.

After playing three matches in as many days, the Bears have a day off before returning to the courts on Thursday, May 1 hosting Vaughn College at 8 p.m. at the Cunningham Park Tennis Center. A win would solidify the Bears fourth place finish in the league standings.
