Mayorga Victorious as Men's Tennis Falls to Lehman

FLUSHING, N.Y.—Carlos Mayorga (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) won his first career match but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) suffered an 8-1 defeat to Lehman College in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The Lightning (1-6) raced out to an early lead sweeping all three doubles contests by an equal 8-2 margin.

With the match already decided with the visitors claiming the No. 2 through No. 5 singles flights, Mayorga downed Rudy Lopez at No. 6 singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to secure the lone point of the match for the Bears (0-4).

Kevin Caicedo (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) dropped his opening set at No. 1 singles, 6-3, but pushed Carlo Maghirang to a tiebreaker in the second set, just edged out 8-6 in the final singles contest of the afternoon.

St. Joseph's will resume Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, April 14 facing Vaughn College at 6 p.m. at the National Tennis Center.
