POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—In a battle for second place in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference entering the final week of the regular season, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's tennis team was defeated by the Culinary Institute of America, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Dutchess County Racquet Club.

Juniors Nolan Parr (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) and Kyle Johnson (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) won the lone match in doubles play defeating Johnghee Lee and Sarah Parejo at No. 2 doubles, 8-6, cutting the Bears (3-8, 2-2 HVIAC) deficit to 2-1 headed to singles.

But the Steels (4-3, 4-1 HVIAC) would take the first five singles matches to lock up second place in the league standings. With the Bears trailing 7-1, freshman Matthew Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) turned back Parejo, 10-6, at No. 4 singles for his second individual victory of the season.

Johnson dueled Lee at No. 3 singles in a 10-6 loss while senior James Hanophy (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) battled Scott Schuett to a 10-5 defeat in the No. 5 slot.

The Bears will wrap up their regular season on Tuesday, April 28 hosting Webb Institute at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at 6 p.m. A victory for St. Joseph's would lock up third place in the HVIAC standings and improve on the team record for wins in a season.
